■ UN(국제연합) 

- 전쟁 방지와 평화유지를 위해 설립된 국제기구. 활동은 크게 평화유지활동, 군비축소활동, 국제협력활동으로 나뉘며, 주요기구와 보조기구, 전문기구로 구성되어 있다. 

 

 1946년 붕괴된 국제연맹을 계승한 것으로 유엔(UN:United Nations)이라고도 한다. 이 명칭은 미국 대통령 프랭클린 루스벨트(Franklin Delano Roosevelt)가 고안한 것이며, 제2차 세계대전 중 26개국 대표가 모여 추축국에 대항하여 계속 싸울 것을 결의하였던 1942년의 '연합국 선언'에서 처음 사용하였다.

 

1945년 샌프란시스코에서 개최된 '국제기구에 관한 연합국 회의'에 참석한 50개국 대표는 1944년 덤바턴오크스에서 회합한 미국·영국·중국·소련 등 4개국 대표가 합의한 초안을 기초로 국제연합헌장을 작성하였다. 50개국 대표는 1945년 6월 26일 국제연합헌장에 서명했으며, 폴란드가 추후 서명하였다.

 

국제연합은 미국·영국·프랑스·중국·소련과 여타 서명국 과반수가 국제연합헌장을 비준한 1945년 10월 24일 공식 출범하였으며, 이후 매년 10월 24일을 국제연합의 날로 기념하고 있다. 본부는 미국 뉴욕시(市)에 있다.

 

주요활동은 크게 평화유지활동·군비축소활동·국제협력활동으로 나눌 수 있으며, 2001년 세계평화에 기여한 공로가 인정되어 전 국제연합 사무총장 코피 아난과 공동으로 노벨평화상을 받았다. 2007년 1월 한국인 최초로 반기문 국제연합 사무총장이 취임했다.

 

크게 주요기구와 보조기구(Subsidiary Orgnas)·전문기구(Specialized Agenies)로 구성되어 있으며, 주요기구에는 총회·안전보장이사회·경제사회이사회·신탁통치이사회·국제사법재판소·사무국이 있다. 보조기구는 총회 및 이사회 산하에 설치된 기구를, 전문기구는 국제연합 산하기관은 아니지만 경제사회이사회와의 협정을 통해 각 전문분야에서 정부간 협력을 증진할 목적으로 설립된 기구를 포함한다.
